Collocating My .gitignore Configuration Files With The Omitted Files
Posted on Jan 8, 2025 at 8:42 PM
Yeah, I have definitely used README.md files in folders that are "there to be used" but not containing actual parts of the codebase. I think combining that with your /scribble approach might be a great solution in a number of different situations.... read more »

Collocating My .gitignore Configuration Files With The Omitted Files
Posted on Jan 8, 2025 at 8:15 PM
I like your /scribble example, Ben. It's like .gitkeep except you are expecting the future files in that folder to NOT be committed to the repo, which .gitkeep wouldn't help you with. Slick.... read more »

I Always Design The Database Schema First, Then The ColdFusion Code
Posted on Jan 27, 2022 at 4:17 PM
Yep, totally with you. I haven't used CF in 5+ years now, but I was a CF dev for 20 years from 1996 on, and I have always worked up from the database. Partly because I started with database work before I got into web work, but also because my mental model is just like yours: once I can "... read more »

I Assume That I'll Never Complete My Work, And I Plan Accordingly
Posted on Jul 22, 2021 at 3:18 PM
@Ben, Yes, DHH has always taken that approach to 37Signals and now Basecamp products, and it is a remarkable legacy, frankly. But it definitely takes planning and commitment, and that can be hard to find these days, especially on the "business" side of many organizations, which i... read more »

I Assume That I'll Never Complete My Work, And I Plan Accordingly

Great insights, especially as a build out from your previous post! It is telling, I think, that your insight here led you to re-invent Scrum, or Agile at least. One of the keys to Agile that often gets forgotten is that the focus must always be on Next Highest Value. And, yes, everything tha... read more »

The Deleterious Effects Of Working At Full Utilization
Posted on Jul 19, 2021 at 11:10 AM
Yes to all of this. Your list of bullets are particularly spot-on, Ben. In fact, it's a decent checklist for future you (or future me): "If you start seeing all or most of these behaviors in yourself, then you're probably burning the candle at 1 too many ends."... read more »

ProvidedIn FeatureModule Is A Confusing Concept For Me In Angular 6.1.9
Posted on Oct 12, 2018 at 8:48 AM
I think I ran across a comment somewhere a few weeks ago (can't remember where), that the { providedIn: FeatureModule } structure really only makes sense when creating and bundling independent modules, like libraries. I guess that makes sense, but I also ended up just setting all my referenc... read more »

The User Experience (UX) Of Sketching In Prototyping
Posted on Apr 8, 2014 at 7:43 AM
I love Balsamiq Mockups for just this reason: that off-the-cuff sort of feel of a general idea of a 'link' or a 'button' or a 'form field' that makes it easy to drop an idea in front of someone who doesn't know what's in my brain.... read more »

Peter, I've been with CrystalTech for years now, although I guess now they're called Newtek. Have had great support from them over the years and no problems, even on shared plans.... read more »

Same here, although I left probably 5 or 6 years ago. Got that same message yesterday and thought, "What? You really think an email assurance is enough for me to dump my current hosting company which has *never* screwed up my server or my account?"... read more »

Keeping The Faith And Thoughts On Commitment
Posted on Apr 6, 2011 at 5:27 PM
@Anna, 'ftw' just stands for 'for the win!' so no cursing involved ;) Just a general term of approval. And I agree, that all of Song is just excellent, good stuff, far too often ignored by preachers and most Christians alike, but no less important.... read more »

Keeping The Faith And Thoughts On Commitment

@Anna, Song of Solomon ftw, Anna! There is much about commitment and focus to be found throughout the Bible of course, but when it comes to that one personal Relationship with another person in your life, Song of Solomon takes the cake. Just thinking of chapter 3, where the bride scours the city ... read more »

Keeping The Faith And Thoughts On Commitment
Posted on Mar 30, 2011 at 12:30 PM
@Ben, I think this whole insight explains much of the power behind "The Five Love Languages", where they talk about love as an action, not an emotion. The way we "feel" about things can and does change all the time, but love really is more about committing to "choose" ... read more »

The Five Love Languages: How To Express Heartfelt Commitment To Your Mate By Gary Chapman

@Anna, Some good questions and observations there! To answer your question on compatibility, yes, I think it is certainly possible to just reach a point where one person's expectations simply cannot be met by the other person. I think this happens in friendships quite frequently (friendship = a re... read more »

I Just Got Badass(er) - UNCIVILIZED Brand Clothing By Mario Valero

It's a common font treatment in acid and death metal, and I think the suggestion of power with the angle of light on a very simple black / shadow treatment on the lifter is complementary to the font. Sure, it's a display font and it probably works better on paper than a sweatshirt, but I'm guessing... read more »
