Well, I mostly agree with your last assesment - that if it is a question of no nulls or no empties, nulls are way better than empties. But I still stand by the difference between known versus empty. I think null is very valuable in a lot of cases where you want to know if something is unknwon (i.e. data was not collected) or if it is really empty.
