Ben, it turns out this is a problem for other languages, too. I occasionally have to do some PHP development and we ran into the same issue there. Just wanted to comment on the option of random salary increases. I used to work for a small business and occasionally the owner/boss would call me into his office (without any emotion positive or negative) and say, "We've increased your salary, you should see it on your next paycheck."
