The other night, I finished, "Web Form Design" by Luke Wroblewski . In it, Luke Wroblewski discusses everything you'll ever need to know about designing web forms in your applications. He covers a myriad of topics including common strategies among the internet giants, label placement, dynamic forms, button placement, eye tracking, field size, fie... read more »

Muscle: Confessions Of An Unlikely Bodybuilder By Samuel Wilson Fussell

Tags: Books, Health / Fitness

I don't like to tell many people about this book. Not because it's bad, but because it's so awesome. By knowing about it, I somehow feel like I'm in a sort of secret club - a club whose only dues are the knowledge and appreciation of the book itself. It's a silly mindset to be in, I know, but one that I have a hard time shaking. Maybe it has somet... read more »

The Magic Of Thinking Big By David Schwartz (Thanks Clark Valberg!)

Posted: December 16, 2007 at 3:02 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Life

On the recommendation by Clark Valberg , this weekend, I listened to the audio book version of The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, Ph.D. . It's a totally cheesy book with hilarious synthesizer music between sections and has the overall feel of a "Sexual Harassment In The Workplace" employee video filmed in the 70s. But, this quirkine... read more »

Amazon's Kindle eBook And Wireless Reading Device

Posted: November 26, 2007 at 8:20 AM by Ben Nadel

I jumped over to Amazon.com this morning to see that they were selling (or rather selling out of) their new eBook and wireless reading device, Kindle . While you can't quite browse the internet as you would with an iPhone or a Smart Phone, in addition to book downloads, Kindle uses the EVDO high-speed data network to download newspaper, blog, and... read more »

Learning jQuery By PACKT Publishing

Posted: October 29, 2007 at 7:00 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Javascript / DHTML

While there are a lot of Javascript libraries out there, there's something special about jQuery. Right when you start to use it, it just feels right. Of course, trying to sell a manager or a co-worker on, "it just feels right", rarely works; it's important to be able to list out the reasons why something is good. Learning jQuery by PACKT Publis... read more »

jQuery Reference Guide By PACKT Publishing

Posted: October 21, 2007 at 1:38 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Javascript / DHTML

I just finished reading the jQuery Reference Guide: A Comprehensive Exploration of the Popular JavaScript Library , by PACKT publishing , co-authored by Jonathan Chaffer and Karl Swedberg. This book is fantastic! It's a bit strange to review a reference manual because it's really just listing out all the features of the API. But, it's the way in... read more »

On the enthusiastic recommendation by Javier Julio , I read and just finished the book Bulletproof Web Design: Improving flexibility and protecting against worst-case scenarios with XHTML and CSS. This book is awesome and a must-read for everyone in the web development industry. It has completely changed the way I think about building web site fr... read more »

Finally Finished Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged Audio Book

Posted: June 16, 2007 at 1:36 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Life

This last week, I finally finished the last CD in the unabridged 42 disc version of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged audio book. It was a tremendous piece of work. It dragged on a little bit in certain parts where Rand basically repeats her philosophy over various different scenarios. But the story line is rock solid. Despite the audio book being 51 hour... read more »

Finally Bought Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged

Posted: May 7, 2007 at 2:23 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Life

This weekend, I finally broke down and bought Ayn Rand's book, Atlas Shrugged on audio CD (which I ripped onto my iPod). This book is huge! It requires 42 CDs and results in something like 51 hours of reading and runs about $67.00. I love getting read to, and for Rand's books, I feel it is almost essential. Plus, I live in New York City, and us Ne... read more »

The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master

Posted: December 27, 2006 at 2:32 PM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Work

I finally finished reading the Pragmatic Programmer last night before going to bed. It's a good book. I didn't know what it was about before reading it and was a bit surprised at the content; it was more of a "best practices" for programming as a methodical job rather than a how-to of programming tips and tricks. I am used to reading more how-to... read more »

The Fountainhead, An Amazing Book

Posted: October 20, 2006 at 9:04 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: Books, Life

I have The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand) on my iPod. I listened a long time ago, but as I am always in shuffle mode, a chapter comes up ever now and then. Usually, I just skip over it to get to the next song, but I was tired this morning and thought it would be nice. About half way through the chapter I was suddenly over come with a feeling of ... not... read more »

Javascript Bible Update

Tags: Books, Javascript / DHTML

Just rounded page 700 in the Javascript Bible . So far, I have been half skimming, half reading the chapters. It's mostly review for me at the moment. I have picked up one or two tid bits that I didn't already know. I am excited to eventually get to the Style sheet stuff. I have never altered a style sheet rule via Javascript. I have altered styl... read more »

Head Rush AJAX by O'Reilly

Posted: June 26, 2006 at 9:40 AM by Ben Nadel

Tags: AJAX, Books, Javascript / DHTML

All of my recent AJAX interest and motivation has been fueled by the O'Reilly book, Head Rush AJAX. Overall, the book was good for me. I am a huge fan of the Head First book series and I think for more of a beginner, the book would have been truly fantastic. It really goes in depth into AJAX and manipulation of a web page through the Document Obje... read more »

The Fountain Head by Ayn Rand

I just finished listening to The Fountain Head on mp3. It's an amazing book and will, I am sure, appeal to anyone who is passionate about anything. It's 36 hours long and well worth it. As it was coming to a close, I didn't want it to end. Yet at the same time, I was dying to see how it climaxed. Probably one of the best books that I have ever... read more »
